It is believed that Sir William Hay built the castle as it now stands in the late 14th century, after which Neidpath remained in the family until 1686. After this, Neidpath passed to the Hay family, following the marriage of Mary Fraser to Sir Gilbert Hay in 1312. Sir Simon was executed in 1306, one year after William Wallace, and the castle as it stood was destroyed. The last Fraser to be in command of Neidpath was Sir Simon, who was known as 'The Patriot' due to helping conquer the English army in battle three times in one day. The castle has an "illustrious history", dating back to 1190, when it was originally owned by Clan Fraser. Sleeping up to two people, it is perfect for a romantic getaway. Neidpath Castle, situated on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders, is a "rare example of a fortified tower house, amazingly preserved, unlike many other Medieval strongholds". A Scottish medieval stronghold dating back to the 12th century that Mary Queen of Scots once stayed in can be rented out this spring.
